Clipper Cruise Line

Company Overview:
Operating four small non-smoking ships designed to get in and out of just about any port at which you might point them, Clipper Cruise Line is the ultimate destination-oriented cruise line, with itineraries reaching from the Orinoco River to Greenland, Alaska, Antarctica, New Zealand and the Orient. The 122-passenger Clipper Adventurer cruises in Western Europe, Greenland, the Canadian Arctic and Antarctica. The more luxurious 128-passenger Clipper Odyssey cruises in the Pacific, calling in New Zealand, Australia, China, Japan and the North Pacific.

The Clipper Experience:
If the absence of a casino, disco, floor shows and midnight buffets doesn’t leave you disconsolate, and if you can bear the thought of not dining even one evening in formalwear, you may well enjoy a Clipper cruise, during which you can enjoy ever-shifting scenery (since the ships are always within sight of shore), excellent lectures about your various destinations, and, when you reach them, walking tours with naturalists or historians. And don’t imagine that there aren’t plenty of creature comforts available fleet wide — including comfortable staterooms, fitness facilities, lounges and libraries, and outdoor pools.

There are no dress codes on Clipper, and no daily newsletter telling you where and when to show up for a demonstration of napkin-folding. You dine with whom you please at a single seating. Come the cocktail hour, you’ll probably want to head for one of the ship’s lounges to chat with experts about your next port of call.

Except for one dressy night, when men are encouraged to wear blazers and ladies pantsuits (that is, the ladies are encouraged to wear pantsuits, as witness the lack of an apostrophe after ladies), plan on dressing casually.

If you prefer being able to hear yourself think, please note, don’t book a cabin on the Main Deck of either Yorktown and Nantucket, over whose engines Led Zeppelin might have had to struggle to be heard.

Fellow Passengers:
Well-traveled, adventurous, often retired sophisticates lured equally by Clipper’s enrichment lectures and by access to places far from the usual tourist path.

Shore Excursions:
They’re typically led by the selfsame naturalists and historians who’ve provided such fascinating lectures aboard ship.

Taking The Kids:
These aren’t ships geared to families with children.

Special Programs and Theme Cruises:
California Wine and Cuisine Experience cruises, calling at California coastal California and Napa Valley towns, feature leading Bay Area chefs hosting two special onboard events during each cruise.

Tipping:
Tips are included in Clipper Odyssey’s and Clipper Adventurer’s package price.
